Free Activites in Saskatoon for Your Kids this Summer

1

Free is awesome. Kids with too much free time is not awesome. Here is a list of activities in Saskatoon that are free (yay!) for your kids (and you) to enjoy!

1) Water Parks, Playground Programs and Paddling Pools

There are water park playgrounds all over Saskatoon, near most schools, that turn into fabulous water fun lands. The City of Saskatoon has compiled a handy little list for your pleasure. May I suggest hitting up several locations throughout the summer?? You children will LOVE YOU! 😀

Handy list of water parks link. (Which is also, I might add…handy ;))

2) Parks

I realize the list above ALSO says “parks“, BUT this list is compiled of free play or picnic type parks. Make some lunch, grab a frisbee or their DS’s and head our to a park. We have several parks, all listed by neighborhoods. Check out some new ones and favorite ones. I do not think family’s do park outings enough. Great way to spend a family day AND it’s free!

3) Walking, Biking, Blading

Soo many walking paths around Saskatoon! Why not take an active approach to a beautiful summer day and tour some of our great walking paths!

4) Library

You may or may not have budding readers on your hands, but the library is a great place for your kids to spend some time reading or looking through books and subjects that they may not regularly read. You can also download library books to your e-reader, which is a sweet added bonus.

5) Mendel Art Gallery

Art is a great way to expand your children’s mind. If you have an exceptionally creative child, they will very much enjoy this experience. The Mendel Art constantly features new artists and their work.

6) Backyard BBQ

Invite family and friends and have a backyard bbq. The key to making this successful is to keep the kids busy. Think paddling pool, swing set, trampoline, a bouncer and toys. The next key thing is food, have everyone bring a dish. You can organize it by having a list of food items that you want made and as you call to invite people have them choose what they would like to bring.

7) Scavenger Hunt

These are easy to create and are a lot of fun. You can set it up in your own yard, or a park or all over Saskatoon if you feel motivated to do so. This will definitely give your kids something to talk about when they go back to school.

Summer is a short-lived event in Saskatoon and summer holidays best, when enjoyed. Give your kids the best summer ever, with this list of free things to do! 🙂

6 Reasons Why the UltraAVX at Galaxy in Saskatoon Rocks!

Movies are the best thing EVER, second only to theatre popcorn. As we booked our Pirates of The Caribbean tickets through cineplex.com, we were given the option of Digital 3D and UltraAVX 3D. I have not heard of UltraAVX3D, so we decided to check it out. Here are the Top 5 reasons why it is better than the regular theatre rooms:

1. Reserved Seating!

When you book your tickets online, just like at TCU Place and Credit Union Centre, you get to choose where you sit! If you are a control freak on ANY level, you will LOVE it! Never mind the stress of where will we be able to sit when you get there, or finding enough seats so that you can all sit together, nevermind ANY of that! Choose your seats and be done with all of that.

2. Cushy Carpet

When we first got to the coveted new theatre, I thought that someone had spilled some pop on the floor because my shoes were feeling squishy and then I wondered if my shoes had become randomly extra comfy. No. The carpet is brand new and feels fabulous! Yay to new, cushy carpets.

3. Do you smell that?!

No stale air here. You know the familiar sweatyish, popcorn smell of your classic movie theatre experience, you won’t have that here. It is at this moment, when you look up and realize that this theatre is new and smells new!

4. Seats

As you gaze in wonder, because you live in Saskatoon and you don’t get out as much as you should, you notice that the seats look different. Vinyl? Maybe. But definitely bigger and they lean, not just the broken ones from the old theatre, but ALL of them! Fabulous!

5. Bigger is Better

Bigger always trumps, I don’t care what your significant other told you, they lied and it does! The screen, the new screen is bigger and clearer. With the technology of tv moving faster and movie efficiently than the movie screen’s quality, the quality of the movie screen was getting left behind. This one brings it up to standard. It is beautiful, clear AND bigger!

6. 3D Today

More than likely in 2 weeks there will be better 3D technology available and another new theatre room will be born, but for now this theatre is awesome and the 3D is fabulous. The movie literally sits in your lap and will make you a little dizzy, because of the depth that the screen allows you to feel within the movie.

These are the reasons why you should check out the new (insert some cheesy, suspenseful musical nodes here…) U-L-T-R-A-A-V-X at Galaxy in Saskatoon!

Saskatoon Programs for Your Kids

Stretching to increase flexibility is an impor...

There are several great and awesome teachers around Saskatoon who are offering programs for our kids to excel at and build their confidence. What kinds of after school programs do you have your children attending? Including interests and price, what programs are your kids enrolled in that are really great? There are several options available, here is an unbiased list of several places around Saskatoon. Feel free to add your favorite place where you are teaching at, or give a review of one of the places that are listed.

1. Sports

There are so many places, including schools that offer any kind of sport that may interest your child. I usually list links for the places that I find, but there are so many that you will have to choose a sport and find a place either close to home or friendly on the pocket-book. Also remember that Canada has a $500 grant write off for children’s fitness, so keep those receipts! 🙂

  • Soccer
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • Bowling
  • Skating
  • Skating
  • Badminton

2. University of Saskatchewan

U of S has a list of great summer camps. They programs are varied and look interesting, each in their own way. Kids get bored during summer holidays and bored kids find their own mischief, why not have their minds grow in positive ways?

3. Art Classes

If you have kids that love making and creating things, they will love learning how to make and create even cooler things.

There could be a host of more schools in Saskatoon, but these are the two that I found the most information on for kids.

4. Martial Art Classes

Martial arts are great because it teaches discipline and self-control. If you have kids that you are trying to teach these skills to, with little success, enrolling them in some of these classes might benefit them as well as you, greatly. These also qualify for the $500 Canadian Active kids grant.

5. YMCA

More of a drop in style list of programs, but the YMCA has a great selection of choices and unique things to learn (baton twirling being on the list). If you are looking for a reason to work out (who isn’t), the programs offered here might be a great incentive for everyone.

6. City of Saskatoon

I tried to get the link for the program listings, to give you a better overview but the link is not working. You may have to call them to get a list of programs or register by phone. I am sure they will have a great list of programs for your kids and more than likely reasonably priced. Worth looking into.

7. Dance Programs

The dance programs offered are quite varied, based on the teachers, locations, prices and specialty. I have my girls going to La Danse and they have great things to say about their programs and teachers.

8. Gymnastics

Great way for your children to burn some of their energy and learn balance and coordination as well.

9. Your Child‘s School

Schools host programs as well. The two major perks are that your child will know most, if not all the kids there and they are usually less expensive than other organized activities.

I know there are several other programs and activities in Saskatoon, please feel free to list them. Extracurricular programs are so important for our children’s social, intellectual and emotional development. Please give reviews of places if you can.
